Stable coin regulation will now be in the hands of Australia’s Prudential Regulatory Authority (APRA). As part of the Australian Council of Financial Regulators, the APRA has created what’s known as the Distributed Ledger Technology Working Group as a way of governing new operations and maneuvers in the industry of decentralized finance.

One of the most controversial steps taken in recent years in the world of digital money involves the establishment of?stable currencies. These coins are very much like bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) in that they are digital and are built atop blockchain technology.

However, where they’re extremely different is that they’re allegedly tied to fiat currencies, like the U.S. dollar, the euro, the yen and the yuan. This is done to ensure that their prices remain “stable,” hence their names. They are less prone to volatility and price swings, and thus investors can access the world of digital finance without having to experience a lot of the risks that come with more mainstream virtual coins like bitcoin cash (BCH) and Litecoin (LTC).

The Israeli Securities Authority (ISA) has issued a Jan. 20?Request?For Information to identify potential regulations that prevent the development of blockchain-based ventures in the country. In addition, the regulator seeks to find out the practical applications of?Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT).

As Israel’s financial watchdog, the ISA formed a committee to promote the development of the blockchain industry in the country. The regulator focused on platforms that issue and trade blockchain-based securities and their properties, including the use of tokens and smart contracts.

This initiative builds from the work of an earlier committee that studied the risks posed by initial coin offerings in early 2019. At the time, they identified the need for regulatory adjustments to create proper infrastructure for security tokens.

The regulator emphasized that DLT “has the potential to promote the Israeli capital market.”

Specifically, it may reduce trading costs and systemic risks to the economy, in addition to better access to capital markets for Small-Medium Enterprises (SME).

The committee did not identify significant risks to blockchain technology, beyond the general cautiousness warranted for any new technology. As long as the specific platform fulfills regulatory aims such as anti-money laundering and financial stability, the regulator has said it will maintain a technology-neutral approach.

Bitcoin Cash?miners have been left with a bitter taste in their mouths after BTC.TOP’s CEO Jiang Zhuoer published his?proposal?to direct 12.5% of mining rewards to support the?BCHinfrastructure over the next six months. In?response, anonymous North American and European miners have announced the formation of an, “opposing mining group.”

“We are a group of North American and European miners representing, at this point in time, 1.6 exahash/s,” said the anonymous group. “We will represent 2.5 exahash/s come May 2020 due to expansion amongst our companies.”

The group stated that they would be launching a competing?BCH?pool to, “offer a voice to miners that disagree with the proposal,” and, “donate a 1% of our income to development teams.”

The group identified as, “staunch?Bitcoin Cash?proponents since the first days,” and claimed to have been, “Big Block supporters for a very long time.” The group also spoke about their lack of engagement with the community on?BCH?social media groups, and how they must remain anonymous, “due to fear of retaliation from the four signatories of the proposal.”

Bluebox

After a pleasant weekly close, Bitcoin (BTC) bulls turned up Monday prepared to push the price to the $9K mark and possibly above. Over the weekend numerous crypto analysts?suggested?that if the price sustained above the $8,650 resistance Bitcoin would rally to $8,800 to set a daily lower high, consolidate, then make another run at the $9,200 mark.

All, except the latter, has come to pass and at the time of writing traders are attempting to push the price through 9,000 but $8,963 has been a sticking point. Purchasing volume continues to rise and the 6-hour timeframe shows the RSI pushing above 72 as bullish momentum continues to rise on the moving average convergence divergence (MACD) histogram.

Neither indicator is in overbought territory and at the moment Chaikin Money Flow (CMF) oscillator has flipped positive above 0 and continues to rise, demonstrating that bulls are continuing to pump funds into Bitcoin.

MIT’s crypto and distributed ledger tech research group, the Digital Currency Initiative,?recently explained that a central bank digital currency (CBDC) will eventually use some of the concepts and technology currently at play in the experimental crypto space.

“CBDC should not be a direct copy of existing cryptocurrencies with exactly the same design and features but there are things we can learn from their emergence — the usefulness of programmability in money and the importance of preserving user privacy,” the MIT group wrote in a lengthy?report?on Jan. 22.

Pointing to the intersection of technology and finance, the MIT group noted that digital value transfer innovation has lagged behind the world’s rapidly growing desire for computerized payment solutions, as partially seen in the e-commerce sector.

The crypto space came into existence out of such necessity, the group wrote, which has contained significant trial and error so far in its history, causing authorities to reevaluated money’s current state.

In the crypto space, much of the ecosystem allows contributions from virtually anyone, making it an open system of development and counterbalance to an extent, while also igniting levels of market competition, the MIT group explained.

“The cryptocurrency ecosystem should be viewed as a laboratory where developers are inventing different technologies, monetary policies, governance strategies, and reward systems which are competing,” the group wrote, adding:

“The space is still in its infancy, but make no mistake — successful ideas from this area will eventually find their way into the more conservative world of fiat digital payments.”

“Libra, invariably because of the potential scale of the project, has been a force multiplier of changing the scope of the conversation.”, said Libra Association vice-chair, Dante Disparte.

Libra did manage to send shockwaves across the halls of Congress and initiate the much-needed conversations about the sector. But considering?Facebook’s?tryst with the US regulators, it is not hard to imagine that its digital currency Libra might not launch in 2020, the year of US elections.

In a recent?interview,?Disparte revealed that before its launch, there are three jobs that it needs to execute. He said,

“We clearly are six months into the project that began like many blockchain projects with a humble whitepaper. In it outlines certain things that have to happen, those things still matter and they have to happen in sync.”

He further went on? to add,

“First we have to get the association governance structure and independence and all of that up and running at a level that would support a generational payment system that could support billions of people who are on the margins of today’s payment networks.”

Christina Segal-Knowles, executive director of BoE’s Financial Market Infrastructure Directorate, justified the bank’s?Financial Policy Committee’s (FPC) December ruling?in a?Jan. 23 speech, saying that without oversight, Britain could be left with a destabilizing “stablecoin-shaped hole in [its] payments regulation.”

That’s because stablecoins may seek to operate outside of the existing financial infrastructure – the one that card payments, online banking services and others inhabit. Those activities are regulated across authorization, clearance and settlement to keep the money moving and all parties assured.

Using a coffee shop transaction as an example, Segal-Knowles illustrated that stablecoins would have no such oversight.

“Stablecoins could mean that in future, when I tap my phone at a coffee shop, I may be able to pay with a token that provides a new payment method entirely – and which would not rely on either my bank or my credit and debit cards,” Segal-Knowles said.

The transaction therefore carries none of the assurances regulators offer for existing payment chains. As the FPC wrote in its December report:

“Poorly designed, operated or regulated payment chains pose risks not just to economic activity directly, but also indirectly via confidence in the financial system and the real economy.”

The four class-action suits against Bitfinex, Tether and parent company iFinex over alleged market manipulation leading to Bitcoin’s (BTC) 2017 bull market have been consolidated — with implications for every BTC buyer since April 2017.

Per an?order?dated Jan. 24 and filed Jan. 27 from Judge Failla of the court of the Southern District of New York (SDNY), four complaints have been consolidated. Plaintiffs Leibowitz, Young, Faubus and Ebanks — as well as assorted sub-listed parties in each of those cases — will now have their cases heard jointly.

The original allegations and controversy surrounding Bitfinex, Tether

The class-action suits against iFinex and its daughter companies crypto exchange Bitfinex and stablecoin operator Tether allege that those companies worked together to create Bitcoin’s infamous price bubble at the end of 2017. These complaints followed similar?research?that appeared this summer.

The potential class pool for these cases is massive, potentially including anyone who has bought Bitcoin since April.
